The Lansing Police Department’s TUNNEL VISION was exemplified when they keyed in on Artis as the only suspect, allowing the killer to escape and possibly commit other crimes. Spouses should always be investigated thoroughly; as often times a spouse will commit crimes of passion. It is much easier to eliminate a suspect from the suspicion of guilt than it is to prove that the suspect committed the crime.
Investigators in this case refused to look in any other direction other than Artis, despite all of the exculpating evidence in their possession. GPS accounts showed the direction of travel and cell phone records proved a time dated stamped conversation. Eyewitnesses who were with Artis at the time of the murder were not interviewed until weeks after the crime, and their statements were discounted by police. When investigators are pressured to solve crimes, a “win at any cost” attitude prevails.
Artis White remains falsely accused of the crime simply because it is much more explainable to have a suspect of a crime considered a “Person of Interest” than to admit a mistake was made during an investigation. "Police officers are never trained to retreat. To admit that they have made a mistake means they have lost. That is something that is difficult for any investigator to admit, right or wrong, good or bad." - Artis White
